Michael Colbassani : Drummer, Percussionist, Educator
Michael Colbassani is a New York City–based drummer and percussionist known for his stylistic versatility and dynamic musical voice. He holds a Bachelor of Music in Music Education from the University of Central Florida and is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Jazz Studies at New York University.
Colbassani’s performance experience spans a wide range of musical settings, including big band, symphonic orchestra, small ensemble jazz, and rock groups. This breadth of experience has shaped him into an adaptable and responsive musician, equally comfortable navigating intricate arrangements or improvisational contexts. Whether performing with or without a click, he brings a strong sense of time, groove, and musical sensitivity to every setting.
As an active freelancer in New York City, Colbassani regularly performs across a variety of venues and musical contexts, collaborating with artists in jazz, commercial, and contemporary settings. Prior to relocating to New York, he built a strong foundation in the Orlando theater scene, where he gained extensive experience performing in pit orchestras for musical productions. He has also performed professionally in theme park settings, including work with Legoland, where he developed a strong sense of consistency, audience engagement, and the ability to deliver high-quality performances in demanding, high-frequency show environments.
Additionally, Colbassani’s background includes participation in Drum Corps International through his time with Southwind Drum and Bugle Corps, an experience that further refined his discipline, endurance, and attention to detail at an elite performance level. These combined experiences have equipped him with a high level of precision, adaptability, and professionalism—allowing him to thrive in fast-paced, high-pressure musical environments.
In addition to his performance work, Colbassani has studied with an esteemed roster of artists and educators. His drum set studies include mentorship from Ari Hoenig, Damien Bassman, Tony Moreno, McClenty Hunter, and E.J. Strickland. On the percussion side, he has received instruction from internationally recognized figures such as Keiko Abe, Thad Anderson, Kirk Gay, Jeffrey Moore, and Joe McCarthy. These diverse influences have contributed to his well-rounded approach to both drum set and percussion performance.
As both a performer and student, Colbassani continues to refine his craft while actively engaging with the vibrant and evolving New York music scene.
